about

A joyfully giddy hammer blow to orthodoxy, Higher Than The Hierarchy is a rattling juggernaut of euphoric indie out on Moshi Moshi.

Described by Moderate Rebels as their “most gospel influenced moment”, Higher Than The Hierarchy is about finding joy where you can, but it also raises questions about the notional social structures we subscribe too… “A lot of people are happier perhaps when they refuse, or forget about their position in a hierarchy. Which begs the question, what would happen if significant numbers unsubscribed to the whole idea?”.

While the single is painted in the bold palette of pop art and executed with a spontaneous pugilism, the contrasting video is a poetically serene affair, a contradiction that makes it all the more striking. “Our video idea is fairly direct and simple. We wanted to show people acting in an uninhibited and joyful way, which we think is an important emotional state and hopefully mirrors an aspect of the feeling of the song and what's going on with us musically.” Say the band “We're also very interested in contradiction. Moderate Rebels like to think about dreaminess, otherworldliness, hypnotic, trance-like states and euphoria but at the same time tension, authority, lies, confusion, darkness and conflict.”

Moderate Rebels are an eclectic, evolving collective, built around Kate Worthington (vocals), Susan Milanovich (drums), Emma Faulkner (vocals), Morag Bruce (keys/synths) and Anna Jones (bass). Fearless in their refusal to be pigeonholed, they touch on every thing from driving rhythmic repetition, discordant guitar fuzz and hazy psychedelia, to late 60s-indebted folk and lilting melodic hooks, via twinkling piano ballads, drum machine rigidity and playful synth pop.

about

Moderate Rebels London, UK

Moderate Rebels love driving rhythmic repetition, discordant guitar fuzz, hazy psychedelia, twinkling piano ballads, drum machine rigidity and playful synth pop. Their touchstones – Phil Spector, Fripp & Eno and Syd Barrett, Spiritualized, St Etienne and Stereolab, and the wry humour of 80s Pet Shop Boys – are stamped with their own inimitable identity. ... more
